A rapier of this identical form and proportions is currently housed in The Royal Armouries (formerly the Tower of London).
The flamboyantly formed hilt is both beautiful and functional. It’s forward plates are pierced and show lavish birds among foliage, while the bars of the guard are slender both defending the hand and having an upward loop to catch an opponent’s blade. The heavy pommel allows for a more balanced feel for fighting. The blade is etched on both sides of the ricasso with the Latin phrase CHRISTUS IMPERAT which means “Christ Commands.”

In a search of better grip and cause this minor issue with the sharp spikes over the handle I ended with .. gaffer tape :-)
Few failed experiments to wind various ropes drove me to the thought of :
" ...if the Renaissance's dudes had access to the modern hardware store , they will not bother with ropes and cords " ...
Excellent outcome with the tape, not very aesthetic but can be removed/changed in minutes .
This sword in my opinion is one of, if not thee best reproduction swords Windlass has ever produced, It's resemblance to the original housed in the Royal armoury is near to perfect.
The build quality is good the fittings of the guard and hilt are securely fastened and the wire wrap of the handle is well done. The only issue is that the turks head wire wrap at the base and top of the handle is alittle unrefined, meaning the odd sharp thin wire makes the grip uncomfortable. However, these swords were almost always handled with gloves and that resolves the issue.
The Blade its self is nice. The length is perfect although, there is a slight 1/2 cm droop from hilt to tip upon holding the blade extended this is to be expected for such along blade. The blade has good spring steel and in my opinion is not overly whippy, and has a good combination of flex and rigidity to easily penetrate filled water bottles, torso gels and the like. The sword is however, alittle on the heavy side for a rapier and tires the arm quickly in sustained use. The point of balance is good 2cm from the top of the ricasso, close weighted meaning the point control of the blade is decent considering its weight.
The scabbard is nice. A soft black leather sheath with an antiqued steel finished chape and throat piece which have a nice simple pattern. The fit is however slightly loose (to be expected with windlass swords). The Faux etching on the blade is a very nice touch and completes the sword beautifully.
Overall, this is an amazing sword for the price and won't disappoint.
