In addition to the already countless health hazards that presented themselves throughout the work day, 19th-century cowboys had to deal with threats from Indians and rustlers. Many carried boot knives in their tall cowboy boots both to lower their risk of injury while dealing with their horses and generally to be able to move more freely. Such knives allowed them to take care of their incidental workload.
